The Windigo is a malevolent spirit from Native American mythology. Indigenous to the Algonquins, the legend varies from tribe to tribe. In all renderings, however, a Wendigo is a human who has been transformed into a flesh-eating monster. There are many ideas about the cause of the transformation: cannibalism, the curse of a medicine man, or the bite of a Wendigo. In all cases the man is transformed and no longer human. Exact descriptions of the form of the Wendigo vary as well. In some tales he is Sasquatch-like, and others he is merely a terrifying part of the darkness. |
